Location was ideal and we had a good experience with the staff - the young lady was very good, in checking us in she was attentive and thorough, and careful to check our expectations of the amenities. She had a natural talent for hospitality.

The Duke of Edinburgh Hotel & Bar, hotel in Askam in Furness

Just 3 minutes’ walk from Barrow town centre, the Duke of Edinburgh Hotel offers free Wi-Fi, free parking and a traditional on-site restaurant and bar.

I must thank the staff from John who greeted us and helped with our luggage,Summer who served our dinner and was so lovely and helpful to JT who went above and beyond the next morning when my husband was unfortunately very poorly. The hotel itself is very clean and accessible for disabled people. The food was really great and we hopefully will be able to go back again in the future.

King Alfred Hotel, hotel in Askam in Furness

With free WiFi, a restaurant and a bar, King Alfred Hotel is located in the heart of Barrow-in-Furness, just 10 minutes’ walk from the train station. Free private parking is possible on site.

Unfortunately I was unable to stay here as there was a flood in my room. However I just wanted to shout out the excellent staff who went above and beyond to accommodate me even picking me up from the side of the road (I was en route walking to my stay) and dropping me off at another hotel within minutes of letting me know I’d be unable to stay with them. Also reimbursing my mornings taxi fair for the inconvenience. I can’t speak for the hotel itself as unfortunately I didn’t get to stay! But what I can say is the customer service is truly above and beyond and they handled a tricky situation (I’d already travelled 7.5 hours!) with professionalism and ease! Well done to the team, if only all hotels behaved this way when mishaps occur! Thank you :)

There’s very little so see or do here, but if you’re wanting a base south of the lakes then it’s fine. It’s about 45 mins to Windermere from here. Also there is a safari zoo but sadly the weather was against us on our stay so we didn’t make it.

The town itself is a little run-down, but the locals are very friendly and helpful. The surrounding nature reserves and the views make it worth the visit. There are quite a few cottages to let in the vicinity and a good sized Co-op is located just near the railway crossing. A larger retail park (if you really need one) is available nearby in Barrow. You're also within easy commute of many of the Lake Districts main attractions - so a good base-camp sort of place to stay.
