Y Star, hotel in Dylife

Boasting mountain views, Y Star offers accommodation with a garden, barbecue facilities and a shared lounge, around 39 km from Elan Valley.

We didn't really get what we expected. Booked a double room with an "extra large double bed" only to be given a room with single beds. No wardrobe either. Pretty good location, easy to find.

To find a lovely Chinese restaurant for our meal that evening was an added bonus. And on Sunday nights they only do Chinese food...which was splendid. Delightful Welsh breakfast in the morning. This is not a delux hotel...but had everything we wanted...and at a fair price.

I loved Dylife Gorge, just down the road from the Inn and the old mining works. It isn't a cliché in the way that images of Eryri/Snowdonia are clichés. In fact, like a lot of the Cambrian Mountains, it's rather overlooked. The gorge is a dramatic steep v-shape with waterfalls and big expanses of bare rock. A path runs along the eastern side; I'm scared of heights, and was relieved to find that the path stays far enough away from the edge to feel safe, but near enough for great views of the opposite side.

Main benefit was clean warm friendly accommodation with pub meal, being a roadside location “in the middle of nowhere”. Dylife might have been a Village once, but most of it has now disappeared and the pub, next to the graveyard, is about all that’s left. Being a hundred yards off the through road, it is quiet, and they’re is almost no overnight traffic. I can imagine it could get cut off on winter with snow: maybe that would be an attraction for some intrepid people?

I liked the place the scene of nature was breath tacking staff was very friendly. There was a beautiful wooden heater in the reception room. It was like a dream and a Hollywood movie for me. I recommend staying more than one night.
