Exceptionally clean and well equipped, a perfect little home from home! Great location for Hadrian's wall and although it's nestled near other buildings it's still so quiet and we woke up to birdsong every morning. The welcome book provided by the hosts was a positive compendium of information, not only about the house itself and all the appliances, but also about the local area and attractions which we definitely took advice from. The shower is really good and very welcome after a long hike in the rain, and the TV with Sky was a welcome surprise when we were too tired in the evenings to do anything else! Fully functioning kitchen with full sized fridge freezer, dishwasher, oven and hob and loads of utensils. And the bed was comfy! Really couldn't have asked for more, thank you for making our stay so enjoyable! 😊

After hiking all day, we arrived at the hotel just before 10pm, when the kitchen had already closed. And still the lovely lady at the reception organized for the most amazing sandwiches to be prepared, which were such a delight after a long day. Our dog was very happy to receive a welcome pack including a ball and treats. The room itself was gorgeous and so spacious, as was the bathroom with the big bathtub. The breakfast was delicious and so beautifully arranged, our children especially loved the waffles. All staff was very friendly and we can't wait to be back.

We found the breakfast to be plentiful and delicious with individual cafetières for strength preference.
The position of the hotel was advantageous as we were going to look at Hadrians Wall only a short drive away.

The hosts make this little inn. My wife has some dietary intolerances and they really went out of their way to accommodate her. Staff all very friendly and food tasty and plentiful.

Very personable host. Very quiet. Good in room facilities. Breakfast included was delicious and fresh. Offered to do clothes washing. Away from the main roads but near to Haltwhistle.

Perfect place to end this leg of the Pennine Way. Really spacious room with lots of space for hanging/drying things and a boot mat/newspaper downstairs. Perfect, if like us, you've just got to the end of a five day walk in mostly pouring rain. Haltwhistle itself is a lovely place to stay, I'd particularly recommend the Yellow Bird Cafe round the corner for breakfast/lunch. We didn't see the hosts due to the self check-in nature of the place but it suited our needs perfectly.
The Old School House, a property with a shared lounge, is located in Haltwhistle, 7.7 km from Thirlwall Castle, 12 km from Housesteads Roman Fort, as well as 39 km from Bywell Castle.
Lots of walks in the local area. The Bridge Inn was open for drinks and we spent New Year’s Eve in the pub. The owners were friendly and welcoming.
Unfortunately Megs tea rooms were closed during our stay but this is recommended locally.

Gilsland was a stop-off point for us walking Hadrian's Wall Path. Due to various mishaps, I felt almost ready to give up but our lovely overnight stay here put me back in the right frame of mind to continue the next day. Very quiet village, a good pub to eat in at night and just minutes from the HW Path.

This hotel is set in stunning grounds with beautiful views of the surrounding countryside . The hotel is a beautiful building but the interior is tired and needing attention , but not to the extent of being awful or wasting the 5 nights we spent there . The staff are wonderful and couldn't do enough to help , and the food was delicious, I have coeliac disease therefore have to stick to a gluten free diet which is another thing that this hotel managed to cater for , although the buffet breakfast was a bit if a problem for me , but lunch and dinners were fine . It was a bonus for my husband and I being able to take our dog on this holiday with us . It is also ideally situated to visit tourist attractions such as Hadrians wall . The nearby town of Brampton is worth a visit as is the market town of Hexham .

Large, country hotel in a remote location with fantastic views. Well maintained gardens and a bowling green and putting green. Went there on a coach trip with friends and on discovering they were dog friendly went back a couple of weeks later with my partner and 2 dogs. It’s a good base for exploring both Cumbria and Northumberland as it is on the border. The rooms are quite basic and in need of updating but clean and comfortable. The buffet breakfast was delicious and plentiful, the evening meal in the dining room was mostly good and the bar meals very good. There are walks from the doorsteps (there are printed routes on reception) although we found them a bit too challenging after a period of wet weather. Will definitely return.
The warm welcome and the beautiful way the Dacre House has been restored will be a good memory of our visit to the north of England. It was by far the most beautiful place we have stayed during our holiday.
Gilsland itself is a nice village. Beautifully set on the borders of the north penines, northumberland and the nicer parts of the Hadrian wall. The village has a pub with a fine kitchen and a nice mixture of local people and fellow travelers. Just at a minutes walk of the accomodation.
Ideally suited for those walking Hadrian's Wall (it's just off the path) with very friendly hosts. I stayed in the the double room with the fabulous bathroom and it was such a TREAT to have a long soak in the bath after my day's walking. Breakfast was great - brought to my room in these Covid times and my baggage transfer arrangements were all well accommodated. Gilsland is a nice village with a pub for food close by and it's very close to Birdoswald Roman Fort too.
The location was superb, being very close to the national trail that we were walking. Breakfast was superb and so was the evening meal that the owner provided at very reasonable extra cost. This is by far the nicest B&B we have ever stayed in and was much better than the (more expensive) hotels we stayed in on the trail that week. The building was very recently renovated to a really high standard and in excellent taste.
The hotel have thought of everything; it's the little things, the details you don't notice you're missing until you visit a hotel that has them and it's just lovely to see. Given that the hotel was newly opened there were no 'teething problems', the food was great and our dogs were treated like royalty.
The staff were friendly, polite and couldn't do enough for you.
Clare was a wonderful hostess, very friendly and helpful. The location is great, right in the middle of beautiful Gilsland. I would highly recommend this property. Breakfast was lovely. Room was nipping clean, had everything we needed, even a dog bed, bowls and treats for our little dog.
Thanks Clare x
Stylish, super clean, spacious rooms, quiet, comfy huge bed, great breakfast and dinner with plenty of drink choice. Anything I wanted was there and the owners are welcoming and have done a fabulous conversion of this amazing house it’s like a luxury hotel.
Jackie was a fantastic host. Our room / studio was absolutely stunning. Jackie booked us a meal in a nearby hotel restaurant and gave us a lift there and back. Breakfast was 5 stars . The huge bed was very comfortable and we fell in love with Noah.
We were starting our hike of Hadrians Wall from Gilsland. The Dacre House was the perfect start. Beautiful room, very comfortable bed, great drinks and dinner and packed lunch to go was awesome. Staff was very friendly and helpful.
