This is a lovely old town.

This is a lovely old town. The Abbey was under some repair but a fantastic, historic place. The rugby stadium dominates Sadly, didn't get chance to do the Roman stuff;maybe next time. The River Tweed is beautiful and there is good walking around its banks and bridges. The centre has some nice pubs. The Kings Arms was very friendly, the locals inviting me into their conversation. Everyone was so welcoming. The walk into Galashiels is about 50 minutes (ten minutes drive, tops). In Gala, the Great Tapestry of Scotland is a must see. I spent nearly three hours in there and still rushed the last bit.

Melrose is the 'jewel in the crown' of the Scottish Borders, with beautiful surrounding hills (Eildons) and lovely Borders towns nearby like Galashiels and Kelso. Borders folk are also very friendly and helpful. Sir Walter Scott's House at Abbotsford is wonderful and it's worth seeing the William Wallace Statue near Dryburgh.

Melrose is a nice little town with shops, cafés, bars and restaurnts, an interesting museum and a lovely historic site: the ruins of a mediaeval abbey. The scenery is picturesque with the river Tweed running through the town. As I love the outdoors, it was important for me to have a lot of hiking routes starting from the town. There are buses running from there, too, to all directions, so important places, the capital or even the sea are within easy reach. I visited Dryburgh Abbey on foot and Kelso and Jedburgh by bus. A visit to Abbotsford, the house of Sir Walter Scott was absolutely intriguing. The rolling hills of the Borders are so beautiful that I would go back this instant if I could.

Trimontium Museum in Melrose market place is absolutely first class - about a huge Roman fort a couple of miles outside Melrose. Melrose Abbey was disappointing as most of it is fenced off whilst they carry out building inspections, and it didn't look like this would change any time soon. Dryburgh Abbey about 5 miles away is better. Abbotsford well worth a visit. We also took the train from Tweedbank to Edinburgh for the day which worked very well. Also visited the Great Scottish Tapestry in Galashiels which is an absolute must. Can recommend Provender in Melrose for dinner. Town centre has a range of independent shops and cafes.

    Quaint small town.

Quaint small town. The Roman Museum is very good as is the visit to the Abbey, although, unlike last time you could not go into the abbey. I was there to begin the St. Cuthbert Trail walk to Lindisfarne. Sir Walter Scott's nearby home is worth a visit.

We love Melrose and visit often.

We love Melrose and visit often. We love browsing the small shops on the high street and they have a brilliant butcher in Martin Baird. A walk round the town is a delight, past the abbey, Harmony Garden and across the chain bridge to Gattonside - or up the Eildon's if you are feeling energetic. We also love Sir Walter Scott's home, Abbotsford which is a short car journey and the Tapestry of Scotland exhibition in Galashiels. Getting to Melrose is relatively easy from Edinburgh Waverley station on the Borders light railway to Tweedbank, then a short taxi ride.

We were looking for a nice place to stay while touring the Scottish Borders and discovered this lovely B&B. The setting is gorgeous, a 1730 Georgian home surrounded by beautiful gardens in a quiet location a short drive outside of Melrose. Our room was comfortable and spacious with a lovely bath and we appreciate the warm welcome we received. Our hosts were able to share some good tips about the area which meant we saw things we would not otherwise have known about. Breakfasts were delicious and beautifully presented .

Having traveled in various countries and seen numerous hotels, motels and B&B's, then Kirklands B&B near Melrose would simply stick with head and shoulders above them. Our stay there was simply superb. Not only there is a great house and comfortable rooms, but the breakfast is just great, both the Scottish full one as well as the Continental version. Also, if the Sun is out and the temperature is good, have a stroll in the enormous garden where you can fins several spots to read a book, or just enjoy the sunshine itself.

This hotel is well established and long running and you feel it here. A warm and welcome feeling upon arrival persisted throughout our four day/three night stay. We had dinner twice in the main dining room which is more formal than the pub atmosphere around the bar. The food was delicious and the white table cloth service flawless. Breakfasts in the pub area—included in our rate—were also first rate and, again, with service to match. We’d make a point of staying here again.

Clare and Donald were exceptional hosts, from the very warm welcome with a hot drink and millionaire shortbread to our farewell with Tablet Fudge they were fantastic. The accommodation was first class, very clean, really comfortable and beautiful surroundings. Breakfast was lovely (especially the fruit and yogurt), we also liked Boris the Cat! We highly recommend staying at the Barn at the Coach House when you are near Melrose. The town of Melrose itself is also lovely.

This was an amazing place to stay. We walked in and thought WOW, it was a fantastic way to end our 3month long holiday in Scotland. Also in such a small street to have a carparking space was great. We felt like we were at home but better. We also spoke to the neighbour who told us of the history of the wee cottage. Explains why there is a post box at the fence. Was also nice that it has a small outdoor seating area. Just gorgeous.

The Kings Arms Hotel is a busy, welcoming and attractive pub/hotel in the pretty town of Melrose. It has lots of character and history, and its sloping floors, beams, etc make it quite quirky. The staff are very welcoming, polite and efficient. Food and drink is very good. Melrose and the surrounding area is great for exploring either by car or hiking on the SUW.

To be honest everything. Just 2 minutes walk from the centre of Melrose, 5 minutes walk to the river Tweed. To say the cottage has character would be a gross understatement, the name says it all. If it came up for sale I would buy it in a heartbeat. If you are looking for a romantic break to rekindle or start a relationship this is the place.

Absolutely everything was just perfect. Will definitely be visiting The Townhouse hotel again. Rooms were fantastic, beds were really comfortable with lovely white ironed linen. We had dinner in the restaurant, which was amazing. Breakfast was cooked to order, which was really yummy. Top 10 marks to the Townhouse hotel and staff.

The location by the river Tweed and next to the Abbey was excellent. The hotel is grand yet relaxed, with lovely grounds. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and the food was very good. The room was a little small, but very clean, quiet and comfortable. We would highly recommend the Dryburgh Abbey Hotel !

Style of the hotel and position just outside of Melrose, on the river, and close to major roads was great. Staff, for the most part, were very friendly, although a couple of teenagers were being teenagers. Two ladies on reception were great and bent over backwards to help.

This is an old hotel, situated in the heart of Melrose. The staff are very friendly. It is very old fashioned, the furnishings are quite basic. However the room was very clean, the bed was comfortable with a new mattress, the bathroom though basic was very clean.
