Around 45 minutes’ drive from Durham and Hexham, Westgate Manor is an elegantly styled Victorian manor house with fine views of the beautiful Weardale countryside.

The house and gardens are delightful and set in beautiful landscape. Kathryn and Stuart are very friendly hosts and took great care to cater for my husband’s gluten-free diet.

St John's Chapel is a lovely little village, with everything you could want for a weekend getaway. A cafe, a Co-Op and a couple of pubs supplemented by events at the village hall make this ideal for a short break, with plenty of places to visit nearby.

Superb location for walks - Mineral Valleys' Project Walk and the Wear Way Walk - two you can do from Saint Johns Chapel. However, great location for extensive walking. :-) Delightful cafe - The Chatterbox Cafe. Delicious food. Two pubs - both had good reviews. Co-op. A couple of craft shops. Very friendly and lovely locals. Clean and tidy 'village'. On bus route.

Its a pleasant place to visit and it feels as if you are stepping back in time as it retains the character of the past but this is balanced against providing modern living facilities. The nature is amazing and for energetic people it provides miles of perfect hiking opportunities. Its worth a visit if you want to spend time in a quiet, calm space

After covid, the village seemed a bit run down, with cafes closed. Busy road running through the centre of the village. Good location for exploring the North Pennines with Teasdale and Weardale within easy reach offering waterfalls, riverside walks and fascination industrial heritage centred around lead mining.
