It was something very special and kind of funny to voluntarily sleep in a prison.
The staff were super friendly and gave lots of tips.
The history of the prison is described with lots of photos and information boards.
The kitchen is very large and well equipped for a hostel.

Great location. Walking distance to anywhere in the city. Homely decor, clean and tidy, and good quality linen.
Michiel was also easy to contact and prompt with replying to messages.
Overall, it was a really pleasant stay. Will definitely book again if we are back in Christchurch.

Boutique Hotel, excellent bar and restaurant, good complimentary breakfast - not like the normal plastic-wrapped offering common in motels. Governors Bay is a beautiful location with plenty of walking tracks nearby. Great Kiwi hospitality which is fast disappearing elsewhere in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Best place to stay in Christchurch, add it to your bucket...
Best place to stay in Christchurch, add it to your bucket list for your New Zealand south island adventure. Impressive historic hotel which offers large upstairs suites of the traditional bygone era which have been beautifully renovated. The best part is you can relax and enjoy the culinary delights of the restaurant downstairs, followed by a few night cap drinks from the bar - all the time while admiring the scenic backdrop of Governor's Bay, before wandering upstairs to your suite where you can continue to admire the view from the balcony leading out from your suite.
This hotel is wonderful 150 years old! We had the king room and loved it. The balcony overlooking Governors Bay is spectacular. We enjoyed a meal in the pub and the pool! The breakfast was self serve with a lot of food. The bathrooms are shared which I was concerned about but they were spotlessly clean. It wasn't busy while we were there so not sure how it would be if they were fully booked. Wonderful stay thank you!
Great value and chic accommodation in a friendly local hotel. Governors Bay should be on everyone's bucket list, and staying at Otoromiro hotel makes that easy. Modern, exceptionally clean, renovated rooms, many with French doors on to a spacious verandah and a view over Lyttelton Harbour. Friendly welcome. A great restaurant. And continental breakfast included.
Nice little hotel in Governors Bay. We looked for sth outside of ChCh and we were surprised to find this gem. Rooms are lights and functional and not to spacious. Bathroom sink on the room. Blinds for the windows available. Great pub underneath so not much walking and there is not much around the place anyway.
Breakfast was continental and help yourself and that was fine for me.
I loved the front garden seating area under umbrellas. Loved the view from the front balcony and the sounds of fantails flitting around. Just loved waking up in Governors Bay really.
Did not have breakfast or dinner, however, we purchased a Salman at the Akoroa wharf, and the owner and chef were kind to allow us to bake it in the hotel kitchen. Great hospitality and accommodating to our of the cuff request. Thank You Very Much.
Penelope and team were fantastic, felt right at home. The hotel is quaint, cozy and charming. Location is amazing, right at Governor's Bay. View from the shared balcony is spectacular. Also, compliments to the chef and team, food was excellent!
We loved our stay at Otoromiro Hotel! The staff were so lovely, the food was excellent, and the room and facilities were lovely and clean also. We will definitely be back one day for a longer stay :)
Loved the friendliness and ease in which we were welcomed into the hotel. Rooms were super clean and access to the balcony was perfect. Amazing view of the harbour and beyond.
location fantastic, staff very friendly, accommodation as expected for a pub hotel, range of beer great, bed comfortable facilities clean. Loved that it was very dog friendly
lovely historical hotel - rooms opened on to balcony with sea views. staff were helpful and friendly. Food was fresh and tasty and had a dip in the pool
