However the queues for the train, the bus going up, the entry, the toilets, the cafe, and the 800 metre queue for the bus back, together with the precipitous stairs and the congested trails through the site, greatly diminished the enjoyment of the experience . Waiting times amounted to several hours, often in the sun. And this was with pre-purchased tickets. Weigh up a visit carefully. Machu Picchu was completely abandoned for nearly 400 years. There are no know written records of who built it, what it was used for or the part it played in Inca history. The guides are totally speculative. They have good stories..... but completely from their imagination. Do your homework and prepare for the visit.

They pick you up from the train station and walk you to the hotel (with umbrellas, if it's pouring!). They provide you with great information about Machu Picchu, and don't try to upsell any guiding/services. The breakfast is very good value- you can customize based on eating preferences. The hotel is very convenient to the Thermal Baths, and not far from the main heart of Aquas Calientes.
